Wisdom Teeth
What are wisdom teeth?
These teeth are your last ones to form in your mouth. Typically, they erupt into your mouth between the ages of 18-22, but can come in earlier or later in life as well. Wisdom teeth are the most likely teeth to have problems and are often partially or fully impacted, essentially meaning these teeth have no function. Their position can also sometimes cause problems with other teeth.
How are wisdom teeth extracted?
Removing wisdom teeth is a very common procedure. Similar to having a filling, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed before removing these teeth. Sometimes a small incision to open the gums or a small amount of bone is removed if necessary to allow us to access these teeth. These teeth are removed as gently as possible, and sometimes will be cut into smaller pieces to remove. Stitches may be required but most of the time the stitches dissolve on their own after approximately a week.
Is it painful to remove wisdom teeth?
A common misconception is that removing teeth is painful. Once you become numb from the anesthetic you may feel some pressure as the teeth are removed, but there should be little to no pain. Our dentists have extensive training and experience to reduce discomfort and provide you with a comfortable experience.
What happens if I don't remove wisdom teeth?
Sometimes wisdom teeth may not need to be removed. If the teeth are straight, not crowded, and fully emerge from the gums then they may not need to be removed. However, serious complications can occur when wisdom teeth are impacted, crowded with the surrounding teeth, or are sideways. A panoramic x-ray will show the position of your wisdom teeth. Common issues associated with not removing wisdom teeth include cysts, shifting of teeth, and infections. It is important to remove wisdom teeth if you are at a high risk of developing these potential problems.
Can I be asleep while removing them?
Although we do not put you to sleep, you can choose to take oral sedation to help ease anxiety and reduce nervousness. This relaxing, comfortable technique often makes the procedure a much more pleasant experience as people often say it helps them not remember the procedure. Feel free to talk to one of our dentists to see if sedation is right for you.
How long does it take to heal after removing wisdom teeth?
The recovery time after removing wisdom teeth can vary from person to person, which depends on certain factors such as age, level of impaction, and difficulty in removing the teeth. Most people only need a day or two to recover before resuming normal daily activities, and many people can return to work or school the next day. You will be given prescription medication to ease in the recovery.
